Prior to attending the University of Phoenix I had attended Oral Roberts University, majoring in Management Information Systems, for three years. My studies at Oral Roberts were cut short by a combination of two factors; a lack of finances to continue and a general boredom in the traditional educational setting. I am a self-educator. I can take a subject I really enjoy, study and research it to the point were I am very well versed in it, and then remember the facts and figures that make it relevant in our world today. I have always been fascinated with the military leaders of our country with a particular fascination surrounding the military genius that led to our victories in World War II. I have been reading biographies, and autobiographies, of leaders and politicians since I was in high school. My love for this era has led me to read from all viewpoints, so that I can be truly educated. I have always been able to understand what I was reading and how it related to the big picture. The decision to go back to school was made easier my employers offer to pay for it. Present The course work at the University of Phoenix has strengthened my problem solving skills by teaching my techniques to think critically about a problem and its possible solutions. One thing I have learned is that in the brainstorming process it is good to jot down all ideas, because often the solution will be in a derivative of an off the wall scenario that would not even be considered because it is to far out in left field. I have learned that the solution to most problems is not the first thing that comes to your mind when you are thinking about the problem, but if you evaluate all the possibilities you will always find a solution. The course work has really taught me the value of teamwork and creating good team dynamics in order to solve a problem. I have learned to listen to input from all my team members, and to not let my personal prejudices cloud my judgments. My written work has gotten better and I have sharpened some of my information retrieval and utilization skills. The two general education courses taken during my course of study that have had the greatest impact on my current and potential employment are Skills for Professional Development and Critical Thinking and Computer Logic. I chose these courses because that helped to develop skills and tactics that will help me to be a better employee to future employers as well helped me develop personally as well. I chose the Skills for Professional Learning class because it taught the concepts of team learning and team problem solving. The most important thing that I learned in this course is what is referred to as the 4P Meeting Management Model by the authors of the book Tools for Teams. This model teaches that a successful team meeting consists of a defined purpose, the right participants, a plan and a defined process. I chose the Critical Thinking class because it was the first class I ever had that really defined and elaborated on what critical thinking is. Critical thinking is the subconscious process that we go through to solve problems, we can however teach ourselves to be better critical thinkers. In Keys to Success the authors basically say that critical thinking deals with â€Å"asking questions, considering without judgment as many response as you can, and choosing responses that are as complete and accurate as possible†. The two core courses that I have taken that I think will help me the most in my future employment are the Web Programming courses. The two courses, Web Programming 1 and 2, taught skills that are need in the business world today. With more and more businesses transitioning to web based applications I feel that knowledge in how these applications function and are developed will be beneficial in the future. The only change I would like to see is an updating to some of the classes, otherwise the program was a good fit for me. The materials being used are outdated in a few of the classes. Information Technology is an ever-evolving field and as such the curriculum needs to be updated almost on a yearly basis. A good example of this is that the University of Phoenix is teaching C in its first programming classes. C++ would be a much better language to be teaching since it is used more frequently now then C. Future Now that I have completed this chapter of my life and am about to receive my degree, after 19 years, I feel that learning is something I will do until I die. I am always looking to learn new things and increase my knowledge base. I have learned to reflect on the past because it is what shapes our future. My personal growth and development will continue as long as I have this thirst for knowledge. At this time I don’t have any short-term future educational goals. I have always felt that it would like to one day get my Masters degree in History, with a concentration on 20th Century US History. My ultimate goal would be to be able to teach a collegiate level course on the technological history of the 20th Century. I think it would be fun to teach a course that takes us from a society that is dominated by the local community to the global society we live in today. In my professional life I hope that achieving this degree will help me to progress from being a worker bee to make the transition to management.

Why You Should Never Take a Job Below Your Skill Level Many often find themselves considering jobs below their skill level in tough employment markets. Faced with ongoing unemployment, or the option of part-time or temporary work, one might think that taking a full-time job, regardless of whether it falls below your level of qualifications, is the best option. But it turns out that there is scientific proof that working in a job below your skill level harms your later chances of getting hired for a better-paying job more appropriate to your qualifications. Sociologist David Pedulla at  The University of Texas at Austin examined the question of how  part-time jobs, temporary jobs, and jobs below a persons skill level affect future employability. Specifically, he wondered how this employment variable would influence whether applicants received a callback (via phone or email) from a prospective employer. Pedulla also wondered whether gender might interact with the employment variable to influence the outcome. To examine these questions Pedulla conducted a now fairly common experimenthe created fake resumes and submitted them to firms that were hiring. He submitted 2,420 fake  applications to 1,210 job listings posted in five major cities across the U.S.New  York City, Atlanta, Chicago, Los  Angeles, and Bostonand advertised on a major national job-posting website. Pedulla constructed the study to examine four different kinds of jobs, including  sales, accounting/bookkeeping,  project management/management, and  administrative/clerical positions. He tailored the fake resumes and applications so that each demonstrated a six-year history of employment and professional experience relevant to the occupation. In order to address his research questions, he varied the applications by gender, and also by employment status for the previous year. Some applicants were listed as having been employed full-time, while others listed part-time or temporary work, working in a job below the appl icants skill level, and others were unemployed for the year prior to the current application. The careful construction and execution of this study allowed Pedulla to find clear, compelling, and statistically significant results that show that  applicants who were positioned as working below their skill level, regardless of gender, received only half as many callbacks as those who were working in full-time jobs the previous yeara callback rate of just five percent compared to a little more than ten percent (also regardless of gender). The study also revealed that while part-time employment did not negatively affect the employability of women, it did for men, resulting in a callback rate of less than five percent. Being unemployed in the previous year had a modestly negative impact on women, reducing the callback rate to 7.5 percent, and was much more negative for men, who were called back at a rate of just 4.2 percent. Pedulla found that temporary work did not affect the callback rate. In the study,  published in the April 2016  issue of  American Sociological Review  as  Penalized or Protected? Gender and the Consequences of Nonstandard and Mismatched Employment Histories,  Pedulla remarked, ...these results indicate that part-time work and skills underutilization are as scarring for male workers as a year of unemployment. These results should serve as a cautionary tale to anyone considering taking a job bellow their skill level. While it might pay the bills in the short-term, it can significantly hamper ones ability to return to the relevant skill-level and pay grade at a later date. Doing so literally cuts in half your chances of getting called for an interview. Why might this be the case? Pedulla conducted a follow-up survey with 903 people in charge of hiring at a variety of companies across the nation in order to find out. He asked them  about their perceptions of applicants with each kind of employment history, and how likely they would be to recommend each kind of candidate to an interview. The results show that employers believe that men who are employed part-time or in positions below their skill level are less committed and less competent than men in other employment situations. Those surveyed also believed that women working below their skill level were less competent than others, but did not believe them to be less committed. Couched in the valuable insights offered by the findings of this study is a reminder of the troubling ways in which gender stereotypes shape perceptions and expectations of people in the workplace. Because part-time work is considered normal for women  it has a feminine connotation, even though it is increasingly common for all people under advanced capitalism. The results of this study, which show that men are penalized for part-time work when women are not, suggest that part-time work signals a failure of masculinity among men, signaling to employers incompetence and a lack of commitment. This is a disturbing reminder that the sword of gender bias does in fact cut both ways.

Reflective Paper In January 1959, the brutal dictator of Cuba Fulgencio Batista was overthrown by the army of Fidel Castro. As a new leader he had a lot of attention and people wanted to know what political road he was going to go down. He chose to be a communist, the United States did not like this and refused to acknowledge him. With the U.S. not wanting any affiliation with him, he drew closer to the Soviet Union. President Dwight D. Eisenhower wanted to overthrow Castro so he raised an army of Cuban exiles and trained them in the jungle. The army was ready, but Eisenhower was no longer the President. John F. Kennedy was left to choose whether to launch the invasion or to back off. Kennedy didn t like Castro at all, President John F. Kennedy went forward with the plan to overthrow Castro. The invasion was a fail, Castro did not get harmed and a lot of innocent people died. As a Cuban this is scary knowing that the land you live in just got attacked by a neighboring country. While all this was happening the Soviet Union s support of Castro grew so as the hostility of the United States. The United States had placed missiles in Turkey which was in range of the Soviet Union. So knowing this the Soviet Union had placed missiles in Cuba which would even the playing field. In addition the Soviet Union had tried to secretly send over nuclear weapons to Cuba.
